I enjoyed reading this short story. A story about a guy, Tyr Og, who was told by his father to find something called the blood cascade. His sister joins him and later they both slip on the ice near this cliff. He manages to stop and tries to help her too. Just as he has gotten her back on the rocks, a bear attacks him. He is fighting the bear with one hand and holding his sister's wrist with the other. He forgets and lets go of her hand and she falls to her death. He is so sorry and sad and just full of rage and regrets. He lost his mother during childhood by demons of the Deep killing her. So now its just him and his father and he is not even sure where his father went on his journey. He is taking the bear's body home since his people need food and a dragon comes along and snatches the bear from him. When he gets home, the sentries to the entrance began to harass him and insulted his family and he flew into a rage and kills them all. He is brought to a Council of elders and they are to judge him although shedding their people's blood is execution. One of the Council elders suggest that he be sent to the Deep instead of being executed. The Deep is where the demons are and will kill you and eat you. I thought it was a good ending because of what he discovered in the tunnels of the Deep. Good story.Product details

When Blood Falls is a dark, delicious appetizer. If you're a fan of darker fantasy, this will awaken your appetite for the world of Robertson's Thrice Nine Legends, and it will leave that appetite just shy of being satisfied. Don't be alarmed though, because there are several other works in this same world that you can, and will want to, read.
This quick and brutal tale of Tyr Og is the type of dark fantasy that I like, it's got action and emotion in equal measure. I felt sorry for Tyr at first, then I found him rather despicable, and by the end, I wanted to see him win. Not a bad arc at all for a 20-something page story. Definitely recommended. Check it out, you won't be sorry.
Joshua definitely is an author that stands out. He's got a very talented writing style and puts a truly believable and deep spin on tortured his main character back story. This is one of those books that once you start reading, you can easily stay immersed in to the finish, especially because you want to know what happens with that tortured soul of a main character, Tyr! (thank goodness it's short!) ;)
From the first page to the last, When Blood Falls is a fast paced read that leaves a distinct memory of one character Tyr Og in your mind long after you finish it. Robertson plays with your emotions in the best way possible as you go from feeling bad for this character to loathing him for his angry deeds to actually wishing for a turn of events and cheering for him in the end. I have never met another character quite like Tyr Og. His capacity for anger and the way he deals with it is haunting.
The story moves fast and is indeed very short, yet you are 100% satisfied at the end of it. Just the right amount of detail left my imagination flowing throughout this book, only slightly less gruesome than Robertson's longer works. I do look forward to treading through the entire Thrice Nine Legends series one ghastly step at a time.

This tale starts with Tyr Og and his sister Maruda hanging on for dear life after slipping on ice high above the ground. His sister is hanging onto him pleading for him to pull her to safety. Suddenly a white bear is at his side and his sister is falling from his grip while he is trying to save himself from the bear. So quickly does his life change and his anger explode. He couldn’t help his mother and now he has lost his sister.
When he returns home he is derided by his peers. His anger overtakes him and he slays his tormentors. Sentenced to the deep, where monsters abide, Tyr must live or die on his own. Accepting his fate Tyr heads into the deep believing himself lost and completely alone, he is surprised when he hears a familiar voice.
Great beginning for the series to follow. Can’t wait to read more.
When Blood Falls is a chilling short story that is set in the Thrice Nine Legends world. A short story, 29 pages, this book gives you more of an insight into the Thrice Nine Legends and The Melkorka series.
This is a violent and bloody story. While the violence and blood didn’t bother me, it might bother more sensitive people. So, a heads up on that. The violence didn’t bother me. I have reviewed other Joshua Robertson books before and I know what to expect from them. This book fits right in the world that he is creating. A violent, unpredictable world that is being overrun with demons.
I did feel bad for Tyr during this book. He suffered one loss after another. First his mother, then his sister. I can’t get much into the book other than that. Like I said above, it is a short story and I would be giving away the entire book if I went into it.
I did have one small complaint. I do have a feeling that my complaint will be answered in the other books. My complaint is that the blood cascade was never fully explained. Like I said, it is probably explained in the other books.
I am not going to do a Pros/Cons list because the story is too short for one. I also feel that me doing that would be giving away spoilers to the book.
I would give this book a rating of Adult. While no sex or language, there is graphic violence. I would recommend no one under the age of 21 read When Blood Falls.
There are trigger warnings in the books. If you are triggered by graphic violence, I would not read When Blood Falls.
I would recommend When Blood Falls to family and friends but I would include a warning about the violence. This is a book that I would reread.
