I’ve always wondered why French and American Oak tasted different...and now I know why! This little wine book was as entertaining as it was educational - perfect for a lazy Sunday or vacation book. The history of wines and cute drawings helped to break up the text, and the whole book was just so approachable. I liked the Wino-buzzwords and poems too, they helped get the key points across without making me feel like I was trying to memorize a textbook. And, the whole book only took a few hours to get through! The author really brings you into her thinking and her romps through wine country. You feel like you could be sitting with her at a winery, chatting about your favorite glass. It was really fun to read! The author makes it OK to describe and enjoy wine on your own terms, and she does not make you feel bad if you don’t identify with proper wine descriptors like “chalky” or “minerally”. Sometimes, you really do just want to know if the wine is “yum or yuck” to you! She also debunked a lot of myths I’d heard from my “wine expert” friends. And the silly stories that started some of the chapters really made me giggle.
Getting into the meat of the book, I found it really helpful to give each varietal its own persona. Thinking of sauvignon blanc as “sassy-grape” makes me remember it’s flavor and pairings. Speaking of which, the pairings are really helpful. I can’t wait to try thai food with a pinot gris as the author did! I sometimes wished for more detailed information of the grapes, or maybe that a few more grapes varietals were included...it was so interesting that I wanted to know more.
I highly recommend this book to any gal (or guy...I caught my boyfriend reading through it several times!) who wants to know the basics of wine. From tips of how to host a wine-tasting party to how to order wine at a restaurant, it’s a very worthwhile read! I can’t wait to give it to my girlfriends and female colleagues for the holidays.

Wine Savvy Girl A Guide To Wine Brittany Deal 9780989710909 Books Reviews
I was turning 30 and hardly understood a thing about wine so in an attempt to develop my pallet and learn more on the subject, it seemed obvious I should participate in a girls weekend wine tasting. The result... pretty pictures, empty pockets, and a bittersweet hangover. After a descent amount of bitching on the return to my investment, a friend gave me a copy of The Savvy Girl Guide to Wine. Although books tend to scare me, it was only 90 pages and to my pleasant surprise, I started and could not put it down. It was simply, cover to cover, all the information I wish I had known before I went wine tasting; how to identify the aromas, which questions to ask, what the buzzwords really mean, and most importantly... to like the wine I like with confidence, price tag and popularity aside. Rich with information and visuals, it was the first guide I have read in a short and sweet format that speaks my language. I can now say with confidence that I know more than most about wine and cannot wait to get Savvy on the next.
A little bit of history, a little bit of information about flavors, tasting, wine etiquette, the most popular wine grapes, colors, etc. Just enough to let you get by and help you describe to shop owners and restaurant sommeliers which kinds of wines you like so you can find others like them and get good recommendations, with enough light humor to avoid taking itself overly seriously. It's not a detailed guide, nor does it give a great deal of information; but what it does provide is the basics, in an entertaining style, in a way easy to understand and enjoyable to read about.
This is a short, easy read for anyone who drinks wine. The book itself is beautiful with lots of pictures and design elements that make it easy (and enjoyable) to breeze through quickly. Most wine books are geared toward oenophiles with way too much detail - this is a perfect resource that gives a fantastic overview of the 8 major grapes (Chardonnay, Pinot Grigio, Pinot Noir, etc.) with the key information that you need to know. My favorite part of the book is the "cheat sheet" for each grape that outlines the common aroma and taste buzzwords typically used to describe it. I've always been overwhelmed when ordering wine at a restaurant and too embarrassed to ask the waiter or sommelier for help. This book has helped me so much! I can now clearly articulate what I like and don't like about wine and feel so much more confident. There's also a great wine tasting checklist on the Savvy Girl blog that I used on my last wine tasting trip...rather than sip like an idiot, I now can form educated opinions about the wine based on the body, taste, texture, aromas, etc. Thank you to Savvy Girl for this fantastic guide!
I really enjoyed reading this book even though I would have to be a savvy guy instead of a savvy girl. The author really does a great job of putting the reader at ease from the beginning and then in an almost effortless and fun manner manages to teach and improve their understanding about wine in terms of the various types, the process and how to taste and enjoy it.
I very much also appreciate the social angle of the book. It gives phrases, prompts and questions to ask at the various wineries that will show you aren't just along for the ride, and might want to know a bit more. The book doesn't ever get pretentious or snotty, quite the opposite. It encourages you to try all manner of wines.
I'm enjoying more wine than ever now. The book helps create a positive feedback loop in that the more you learn and taste the more you want to learn and taste. It is a great book to get you interested in wine.
